Sunday night it snowed here. Yesterday evening I found out that even if I had tried to leave when planned it would have been impossible - all the flights to Chicago were canceled. Since I fly on my dad's pass, it would have been a wasted day at the airport had I even gone to try. The best part is that I won't be able to get out today either because of all the canceled flights. So I get to stay here in the great state of Connecticut until Tuesday.
You may inquire as to my reasons for being in Conneticut...espcially if you are one of my readers who was not aware of my plans for travel this weekend? I'm here visiting my friend Vi. Technically, visiting both Vi and her boyfriend Bill. We're hanging out in the snow-covered terrain...acutally mostly just in her condo. We've watched movies, played Nerts (the best game ever...I love teaching new people...but when the new people beat the teacher, that's just embarrassing), we've had fun being silly and making up all sorts of jokes, and have even had some adventures.
Sunday night, before we were aware of the severity of the snowfall we made plans to go bowling, grab a drink at a bar, and get a movie at Blockbuster. So we left the house, deciding wisely to take Bill's truck, and soon noticed that no one was out on the roads. What's more is that not too long after making the discovery we made another one. Nothing was open. Not the bowling alley, not the bar, not Blockbuster. And then it became obvious that those three establishments weren't in the minority. Everything was closed...well almost everything. Among the darkness of the storefronts, one lone OPEN sign light up everything around it. Vi shouted..."Hey! Something is open over there." After a short debate, we slid across the road to see what the sign illuminated. A restaurant. A family owned Greek place, with it's OPEN sign brightly beckoning us. So in we went. Only one guy inside, presumably the owner. He looked as though he was about to close. We questioned and he said it was okay. His English clearly limited, my friends and I glanced at each other quickly before deciding to take a seat. We looked over the menus, he prepared our food, we quickly ate, paid, and left. Somewhere in the middle of all that the owner had gone out to warm up his car. He waved goodbye to us and we pulled out of the parking lots only moments before he did. We were all inspired by his kindness. He let us stay even though we were pretty sure he would have been gone if we'd been five minutes later.
Last night we hit the bowling alley. I lost big time but we all had fun. Ordering in Chinese and watching Garden State (which I recommend if you've not seen it) were followed by another Nerts game. I made pancakes this morning for breakfast while Vi finished up her brief for her moot course class....ah, law school. Tonight we're gonna go out for sushi and watch another movie.
It's been a great vacation and a much needed break from the mundane life I've come to lead. I think I might just stay here....
Back in college, in 2004 when blogging was hardly even a thing yet, I was here. Blogging before blogging meant anything to anyone. You can look in the archives for my past writings, but it was much more like a journal in the past. When we started fundraising, I messed around with the idea of launching something new for this new phase of our journey but actually hated that idea. I am a sum of all of my life and so much of it is here already. So I'm keeping it here. At least for now.
My main focus these days is blogging about our newest journey into the bizarre and wonderful world of gestational surrogacy. Posts dated 2013 and forward will trend heavily toward that journey. I don't promise everything I write will be about though. There might be other things that sneak in occasionally.
Please come along our journey with us. As the saying goes, "The more, the merrier!"
