Kari left for Africa today. She's going to spend her spring break with her brother in Ethiopia. She almost didn't get there though.
7:15pm
Paul, Kari, and I arrive in line at the check-in after having eaten dinner at Harry Carrey's restaurant. We get there just in time for the confusion. It takes us a while to figure out that there is some sort of issue . . . though the lack of people actually checking in was our first clue.
7:31pm
Kari is handed a card with her flight number and a time - 7:31. We start realizing something is very wrong. Able to deduce that one flight is overbooked, hearing that it was not her flight number, I thought things might be okay for Kari.
7:45pm
A British Airways employee informs the waiting masses that there are no seats left to London on any flights tonight. Doesn't matter that they all have confirmed reservations....no seat assignment, no can get on plane. They remind the line of agitated costumers that check in is two hours before departure. Right. That's why we were there at 7:15 for a 9:20 departure.
8:00 - 9:05 pm
Waiting. Standing. All of us getting madder by the minute. Kari was not getting to London which meant no catching her connecting flight...which meant her trip was in jeopardy all together.
9:05 pm
Finally it's Kari's turn to go to the counter. Conversation...blah, blah, blah....no getting her to Addis Ababa. Questions of supervisors lead to Kari climbing over the counter and her bags being taken from Paul and I.
9:10pm
Kari comes out of a back room, bags gone, rushing. Quick goodbyes are said and something is explained by British Airways woman about someone not making the plane. Kari ran towards security. The held the plane for her and that was it . . .
She is off for a week and a half of adventures in Africa.
Back in college, in 2004 when blogging was hardly even a thing yet, I was here. Blogging before blogging meant anything to anyone. You can look in the archives for my past writings, but it was much more like a journal in the past. When we started fundraising, I messed around with the idea of launching something new for this new phase of our journey but actually hated that idea. I am a sum of all of my life and so much of it is here already. So I'm keeping it here. At least for now.
My main focus these days is blogging about our newest journey into the bizarre and wonderful world of gestational surrogacy. Posts dated 2013 and forward will trend heavily toward that journey. I don't promise everything I write will be about though. There might be other things that sneak in occasionally.
Please come along our journey with us. As the saying goes, "The more, the merrier!"
