Back in college, in 2004 when blogging was hardly even a thing yet, I was here. Blogging before blogging meant anything to anyone. You can look in the archives for my past writings, but it was much more like a journal in the past. When we started fundraising, I messed around with the idea of launching something new for this new phase of our journey but actually hated that idea. I am a sum of all of my life and so much of it is here already. So I'm keeping it here. At least for now.

My main focus these days is blogging about our newest journey into the bizarre and wonderful world of gestational surrogacy. Posts dated 2013 and forward will trend heavily toward that journey. I don't promise everything I write will be about though. There might be other things that sneak in occasionally.

Please come along our journey with us. As the saying goes, "The more, the merrier!"

Smart Parents

I just read a post today by my friend Angie who went to court to legally change her little girl's name due to the fact that it gets mispronounced. She's a very smart mom. I wish my parents had thought of that.

Instead they just liked the unusual spelling of the more common name "Katie" and chose to name me Katy. It gets mispronounced all the time. Most commonly people assume it's Kathy. I think they are just too lazy to notice there is no "h." It bugs me. Once or twice some very audacious people have actually suggested that I've left out the "h" in my name. No, thank you. I think I know how to spell my own name. Another common mispronunciation of my name is with a long a instead of a short one, making it sound like I am fickle...or that I should be a bag on a golf course. Though lately I've been privileged to hear some better sounding "mispronunciations" I cannot tell you between my first and last name how very very smart I think Angie is for legally altering her baby's name before she'll have to remember all of that "Noel" nonsense.

Here's something you may not know about my name: My dad chose the spelling after the Steely Dan record "Katy Lied." Kinda fun. I guess if you go to all the trouble to select a unique spelling of a common name, you're not going to think to legally change it just because your daughter is told she doesn't know how to write her name. I never used to like my name. But I do now. It's very unique. And beautiful really.

You know, names are a crazy thing. My mom named me after the Rolling Stones song (Angie...) which by the way, is now the ring tone on my pretty pink razor. I love technology.

My friend Katy's (different one, spelled the same) parents named her Mary Catherine Fitzpatrick. Now you're asking how they came up with Katy right? No idea. But at least it gave me permission to call my child whatever I want. I just hope she doesn't hate me someday for calling her Ellie when that's not her name...
