So the questions at work have become unavoidable with the cane now. But people are still kinda awkward about it. I'm sure they just don't know what to say or how to ask why I'm using it but the things that they wind up coming up with are pretty funny.
I've heard everything from "Did you get hurt?" to "Is that yours?" to "Is that a cane?" My personal favorite: "Is that a real cane?"
Expressing my delight and frustration over having to answer these questions to Trisha last week she gave me some great ideas for responses. I wish I were as clever as you Tra. But alas, we cannot all be so...clever. I've tried on some of the responses this week but have yet to use her best one. I'm saving that for the best moment. I might use it tomorrow when conference starts. I'm going to have my boss print me a name tag that says "Here to Serve - Yes, this is a real cane and I'm not afraid to use it!"
Trisha's best suggestions:
"You should just tell people you're actually 80 but that you're aging well."
My personal fav: "Is that a real cane?"
"Oh, good! You can see it too. Can you see my top hat? I'm having trouble with that today."
A few of the ones I've tried so far:
"Is that yours?"
"No, I just thought I would hold it for my grandma while she is at home."
"Did you get hurt?"
"No, I just like to walk with this. It's fun."
I also had to retire the bear and get something more durable. My new cane folds, which is cool. I can actually fit it in my purse. My kids think it's funny to take it apart at lunch and one of them told me his grandma actually has the same one. Welcome to my world.
Back in college, in 2004 when blogging was hardly even a thing yet, I was here. Blogging before blogging meant anything to anyone. You can look in the archives for my past writings, but it was much more like a journal in the past. When we started fundraising, I messed around with the idea of launching something new for this new phase of our journey but actually hated that idea. I am a sum of all of my life and so much of it is here already. So I'm keeping it here. At least for now.
My main focus these days is blogging about our newest journey into the bizarre and wonderful world of gestational surrogacy. Posts dated 2013 and forward will trend heavily toward that journey. I don't promise everything I write will be about though. There might be other things that sneak in occasionally.
Please come along our journey with us. As the saying goes, "The more, the merrier!"
